Types of Services

LVB offers free tutoring services to adults in the following subject areas:

General Education Diploma (GED) preparation tutoring focuses on the following core subjects (corresponding to the GED subject tests):  math, writing, social studies, science and reading.  The goal of GED tutoring is for the students to successfully complete all portions of the GED test to obtain their General Equivalency Diploma. Many GED students are identified and assisted in conjunction with their enrollment in free Community Action Adult Education GED class.  Others, however, need the assistance and encouragement of a tutor to prepare for the GED at their own pace.

English as a Second Language (ESL) tutoring provided by LVB assists students fluent in a language other than English become more proficient in their English speaking, reading and writing skills.  We offer one-on-one tutoring and provide assistance to those students enrolled in Community Action free ESL classes.

Our free U.S. Citizenship class is designed for those individuals who wish to become United States citizens.  Students study and prepare for the citizenship exam.  The class also covers the process and benefits of becoming a U.S. citizen.

Tutoring in Basic Reading is designed for individuals who speak and understand English, but whose reading skills need improvement.  Their lack of reading skills may prevent them from pursuing a GED or competing successfully in the job market.  These students are tutored individually using programs and materials designed specifically for each individual learner.

The Workplace Literacy program is designed to increase workplace skills, raise competency levels and enhance job performance at the local level.  The program combines Basic Reading, ESL, GED preparation and industry-specific education components.
